The Power of Digital Marketing: Lessons from Two Success Stories

Updated: Sep 17, 2025

The Power of Digital Marketing

In today’s competitive business landscape, marketing is not just an optional activity—it’s a vital component for growth and survival. Whether you’re selling products or offering services, getting your message out there in the right way can be the difference between success and obscurity. Over the course of my career, I’ve had the privilege of transforming businesses through marketing, and two examples stand out: a patio company in Perth and a novated leasing company in Australia.

Both companies initially worked with marketing agencies based in Sydney and Brisbane. While these agencies were well-regarded, they lacked expertise in critical areas of digital marketing, such as SEO, Facebook, and Google ads. When I stepped into these roles, it became clear that digital marketing would be the key to unlocking their potential.

The Power of Digital Marketing: The Importance of Marketing in Business Growth

Before diving into the specific strategies that I implemented for these companies, let’s talk about the overarching importance of marketing. Marketing is more than just advertising; it’s about understanding your audience, building a brand, and creating meaningful connections with potential customers. A robust marketing strategy can help a business:

- Build Brand Awareness: Consistent marketing helps potential customers recognize your brand and understand what you offer.

- Generate Leads: Effective marketing brings in qualified leads, which are essential for revenue growth.

- Establish Credibility: Content marketing, such as blogs and social media posts, positions your company as a thought leader in your industry.

- Adapt to Market Trends: Marketing allows companies to stay ahead of trends and respond to the ever-changing needs of their audience.

These principles were critical to the transformations I helped achieve for the patio and novated leasing companies.

Patio Company: From $3000 Ad Spend to $0

When I joined the patio company in Perth, they were spending $3000 a month on ads, yet the return on investment wasn’t where it should be. They had partnered with an agency based in Sydney, which had strong experience in traditional marketing but was falling short in the digital space. The agency lacked knowledge in SEO, Facebook advertising, and Google Ads, which left significant growth opportunities untapped.

The company’s team, although experts in their industry, had no real understanding of digital marketing. That’s where I came in. With my experience, I knew exactly what needed to be done to elevate their online presence and reduce their ad spend without sacrificing lead generation.

Here’s what we implemented:

- Weekly Social Media Posts: I developed a social media calendar that focused on creating engaging, relevant content. Platforms like Instagram and Facebook were instrumental in showcasing the brand’s work, driving engagement, and building a community of loyal followers. We also used Google Photos and Pinterest which people don't usually use, but the photos were viewed more than our website was.

- Target Audience: As mentioned in my previous point, we used images to sell. This is because a target audience for a patio building company is looking for a beautiful creation. We used only good quality photos from our installers to remarket in the right places such as Google photos or Pinterest. Before buying a patio most of our audience were creating mood boards.

- SEO Optimization: Every page on the company’s website was optimized for search engines. This included updating meta descriptions, integrating targeted keywords, and ensuring that the site’s structure was easy for Google to crawl.

- Backlinks and Referral Links: A linking strategy was created by utilising free sites and paid for to rank higher on Google.

- Content Creation: Blog posts became a central part of our strategy, focusing on DIY patio projects, design tips, and industry trends. This content not only attracted potential customers but also positioned the company as a leader in the patio industry.

The Power of Digital Marketing - After six months of these targeted strategies, we completely eliminated the need for paid ads. The company went from spending $3000 a month on ads to $0, and it became the top-ranked patio brand in Perth through organic search alone. The company’s online presence was stronger than ever, and we were driving consistent, qualified leads without spending a cent on advertising.

Novated Leasing: From 3 Leads a Week to 12 Leads a Day

The novated leasing company I worked with faced a different set of challenges. The novated leasing market in Australia is vast and highly competitive, which makes standing out a difficult task. The company had previously worked with an agency in Brisbane, but, like the patio company, they lacked digital marketing expertise, especially in SEO and social media advertising.

When I joined, the company was receiving only three leads a week, a number that simply wasn’t sustainable. Within six months, I had not only increased their lead generation but also revamped their brand to make it one of the most visually appealing and well-known in the industry.

Here’s how we achieved that:

- Lookalike Ads: Using the company’s existing customer list, I developed highly targeted lookalike audiences for Facebook ads. These ads allowed us to reach people who were similar to our current customers, which led to an explosion in leads—from just 3 a week to 12 leads per day.

- SEO Strategy: Even though SEO in this space was highly competitive, I worked diligently to optimize the site. This included comprehensive keyword research, optimizing content, and building backlinks. Over time, the company’s ranking improved, leading to a steady flow of organic traffic.

- Brand Revamp: Beyond the technical aspects of marketing, I recognized the need for a complete brand overhaul. We refreshed the company’s color scheme, revamped their website design, and aligned the content with a more modern, professional image. This helped establish the company as not just another novated leasing provider, but a leader in the field.

Through these efforts, the novated leasing company became one of the best-looking and most prominent brands in the space, and their leads skyrocketed.

Why Hiring a Marketing Specialist is Critical

In both of these cases, the companies had been relying on external agencies that lacked the specific digital marketing skills required to succeed in today’s marketplace. Their internal teams also had limited marketing knowledge, which made my role as a marketing specialist vital to their growth.

I was hired as a junior marketer, but within six months, I was promoted to manager. My rapid promotion was a result of my extensive experience and the tangible results I delivered. It’s important for businesses to understand that marketing is not just about running ads or creating content. It’s about implementing a cohesive strategy that involves SEO, paid ads, social media, content marketing, and brand management.

When done correctly, marketing can transform a business, as seen with both the patio and novated leasing companies. Whether you're a small business or a large corporation, having a dedicated marketing specialist who understands the nuances of digital marketing can make all the difference.
